Default Bait Fish ID Help

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures. On Friday afternoon I ran in to three schools of fish that were hand size or a little larger in and around Boggy Bayou off of Choctawhatchee Bay. I was able to catch a few on some small jigs but sharks ate most of them as they were reeled in. They were roughly the shape of a bluefish or jack but had a dark blueish-green top and were lighter colored below with scales and a dot. They were darker in color than a bluefish and more scalely. I've been fishing the Panhandle my whole life and I do not recall seeing these before. I have looked through a few books but I didn't see anything that was an exact match.

Any ideas?

Yep, thought I'd aks. Not too many bait fish will hit a 2" jig though.

There are some monster menhaden in the bay system this year. They have scales and a dot. Can't think of anything else.

Yeah, now that I look at the pictures on Google that is what it is. Do they get darker as they get bigger? I don't remember seeing them that dark.

They are everywhere in the bay and in the mornings and before sundown can hold lots of fish feeding on them. They get huge throughout the summer.

I saw a 5' bull shark thrashing a school of those big menhaden last week by Garçon point bridge. It was pretty cool to see!
