Default A Backup Plan ... ?

We'll be out at Fort Pickens mid-month ... first time back since 1980 ... intend to do as much fishing in the surf & bay as possible, while still maintaining "domestic tranquility".

If however, due to bad weather, an ill wind, or general incompetence we're unable to catch anything but hardheads and sea-robins, we might start looking at a headboat, or to split an inshore/nearshore charter.

( Yes, my wife does fish, but if it's really slow she might need "retail therapy", and that could end up costing about the same, if not more. )

There's one head-boat doing walk-on trips. In the past, elsewhere, we've found there are better ways to get salt-air than using a hand-winch on a pool-cue to haul up fish as heavy as the sinker. Would our prospects be significantly different this time of year onboard The Entertainer?

Smaller vessels, up to 6 passengers, are available for inshore & nearshore, and their prices are roughly the same. Any suggestions on how to plan for a short-notice trip would be appreciated.

The private inshore/nearshore (some of us even go well offshore) 6pax boats will be more expensive, however, being private, the Captain caters to you, no the other 48 people on the boat. We also tend to have better/more appropriate gear for the fish you are catching. Mingos on a 4/0 with 80lb mono isnt fun, but on a little 3500 spinner with 20lb braid it can be a lot of fun for example. The boats also tend to be much faster allowing us to move around a bit more if/when needed.

There are tons of guides in the area and with spring break winding down and school coming back in, you should find some open availability.

If youre interested in a private boat trip, I run $700 for 6hrs up to 4 people on a 26' Twin Vee. Most boats in my price range will be smaller bay boats. Right now the mingo bite is hot, trigger are open, spanish are hot and you never know when that cobia shows up, I already have one on the year!

Thanks for the feedback.

Not down on larger boats, but I've been on them since the late 50's.

There's a lot to be said for heavy mono and simple equipment.

( Like when Bluefish are blowing bunker-chum all over the deck. )

We'd just rather explore alternative options when available.

Will keep your contact information for later reference.
