Guys, I have a new construction, which window protection has less holes/visibility on the exterior of the house (excluding impact windows) I don't like the J channel system, appears that fabric has a lot of mounting holes around the window. What are your thoughts?
You can mount metal panels the same way you mount fabric. The metal panels are run horizontally. The studs are practically invisible (especially if you paint the plastic covers the color of the house). I have the J channels, w/vertical aluminum panels, which I much prefer for ease of installation (no ladder work, fewer panels). This house came w/the system. Having said that, I'd MAYBE go with the fabric next time, OR the impact glass (but that was not what you asked for). Congrats on the new house!
If you are looking for less hardware than fabric (studs) I'm guessing there is none (other than impact glass, which I used on my last house, and never regretted the extra expense). I do know that the older I get, the simpler/easier I want things.
Thanks !! I built a piling house several years ago & used impact. Window bill was 3 times as much as standard. This house has more windows & I went with standard, did not even price impact. Probably would have been close to $10K. It is a slab house & access is a lot easier.
Actually my BIL uses 5/8"(?) plywood panels, w/Ply-Lox clips (brick siding). He's retired military and uses USA insurance (I think that's what it's called). He says they find that acceptable for insurance discounts....? They are temporary/removable.
