Default 1979 Evinrude 35

OK, I'm not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but not the dimmest either. I have a '79 Evinrude 35 that I have had to a mechanic and it never will act up when there. I know it's old, but so am I and I still work pretty good. This motor starts and runs great in the barrel, in fact, it runs great at wide open until it doesn't. I'm scared of it now as it has left me way the heck up Yellow River twice and recently way out in Escambia Bay. Last time it ran beautifully for about 20 minutes, I fished awhile, and was returning when after about five minutes I heard a change and the engine began to slow down until it just quits. I did get it started back and it would only idle across the bay (in a headwind of course). Wouldn't take any throttle without going dead. I made it back and once it cools down, it'll start right back up and run like a new one until I get way the hell away from the ramp. My mechanic ran it in a tank for hours under load and couldn't make it duplicate. I am scared to use it now, as three times is my limit. Anybody have any ideas? I have changed plugs, tanks, hose, and put in a water separator, but it still happens. Any body got any ideas or advice other than an anchor?

Thanks.......... Bob

check the compression. sounds like head is warped a smidge and once hot, that smidge opens up to a gap and allows too much air in cylinders. once it cools, the metal shrinks and the gap is back to a smidge.
FenderBender and murfpcola like this.

My thoughts as well, but if the coil had a open in the winding it would not run at all.

Thanks, I'll take a look at replacing the coils. We did run a compression check and both were within limits. Thanks again
