BTW, this terrible series of tragedies which lead up to this makes me think that drilling for oil is safer. But I am not a scientist either.

The heat generated from the fuel rods is used to make steam, the steam then is forced into a turbine.

I just read the fuel rods are stored in the spent fuel rod tanks for a year or more cooling off. They remain "hot and dangerous" radioactivity wise for thousands of years maybe more depending on the isotope.

The thing about it is, They actually shuffle the fuel in and out every 18 months to gain the most efficiency from it. So the fuel stored in the pool is at various stages. Kinda like rotating your tires!! The plant I worked at had fuel from back in the 70's and even though it was no longer useful for generating steam it was still considered unstable and would provide a lethal dose. If you can believe the news reports, that would mean that the plant in Japan had just unloaded their fuel into the pool for maintenance on the reactor. That would be the worst possible situation for them.
