Default trailer idea

Thought I'd share a recent trailer tweak, thinking that it may help some others, in particular now that hunting season is upon us. I used some 1/2" heavy wall pvc pipe to construct bows that will allow me to quickly cover a large portion of my utility trailer. The trailer bed is 18' with a 2' dove tail and I have about 3/4 of the run set to cover... depending on the tarp you can drape it to cover the whole bed if you had materials/stuff that you wanted to protect. Tarp is secured using bungee cords. The basic goal was to provide an area for a couple cots/sleeping bags as well as some other basic camping gear. Head room is almost 7'.

I used 2 ea. 10' sticks connected to a tee at the top. This is a glued connection. Down the center is a roughly 16' section of 1/2" pvc that has tee's roughly every 2' and each tee has a 4" section of 1/2" pvc pipe (all glued) that connects to the bows, this is simply a force fit connection. This provides some good rigidity and allows a great "ridge" for a tarp. The bows slip into receiver tubes welded at equal intervals down the side of the trailer. This pipe structure goes up in 10 minutes or so, one man and breaks down just a quickly. Stores easy down the side of the trailer. Rigging the cover will take a bit more time and will most likely be a two man job. Still kicking around ideas and ways to improve this... mostly I ponder a similar set up on a boat trailer that will protect it while parked in the back yard or marina... I like the idea of the bow supports being on a slider that would allow all the bows to be pulled forward to the front of the trailer to facilitate launching or washing/maint. Anyhoo, thought I'd share this.

Kenny, I plan to weld in a set of U shaped uprights (six or so) that will stack the pipe tightly one on top of the other. This will be down the side, outside of the trailer bed, so you don't loose space. This issue for me now is that there are two gas can racks one on each side of the trailer and a spare tire rack as well as the little crane, all of which conflict with this idea. For now bundling the pipe on the trailer bed along side the uprights would work fine.

I like it, I think anybody with a trailer that hunts and fishes could use it.
