Default Police Academy Question for the Officers out there..

Hey guys -

I have a brief question for any/all peace officers out there that have gone through an academy. Specifically, though, if anyone has done this in Alabama. Since a police department in Alabama puts you through the academy, does anyone know at what point you are contractually obligated to the police department? My cousin asked me, and I told him I thought it was like OCS in the military - that is, you can drop or fail out and not be obligated to the service until you actually graduate/commission. Does anyone know if this is accurate? Or are you obligated once you START the academy? Thanks, all!

-R.

Not sure bout Bama, but in Florida an agency sponsors a person to go through the academy but you are not obligated nor are you guaranteed a job. Many Florida agencies use to (state corrections still does) hires and pays you to go through training and then you are on contract for 2 years (I believe). I'm purty sure if Bama does the same there will be a contract, but you may also buy yourself out of the contract...Best thing to do is to call the agency you are interested in....

Most Departments in AL will require a 2 year contract. If you leave the agency within the 2 year window, you repay the agency for your academy training, and any equipment they purchased for you.

We had this happen a few years ago........... it cost the guy about 3k.

This does not apply if you fail out of the academy. If that happens, its the same as being fired.

Swat - thanks for that. I figured there was some kind of "breach of contract" thing, which I told him. My question to HIM (that he subsequently wanted to clarify) was - when does the contractual obligation actually START? After the academy? I figured the academy could also be "dropped," but still incur a small financial obligation.
