Question Pain Management Doctor?

I am hoping someone here might be able to help point me in the right direction.

I have had chronic Migraines for over 15 years. They are currently controlled with Topomax, and relatively mild medications (firocet). I can't take Imetrex, or any of the other 'miracle meds'.

So my neurologist went through all of the thinkgs that have been tried over the years and basically got frustrated that he could not help me, and (IMHO) that pissed him off. He seems to think I need to take stronger meds. He has instructed my primary care doctor not to treat me, and has recommended I be seen my a pain management doctor.

Here is why this is on PFF. I have a Masters license, and it will be up for renewal next year. I have been treated with some hydorcodone / opiate type meds and I know I am not competent to handle a vessel underway with such meds... so I do not want to accept being moved to stronger meds.

I am looking for any one here who may know a competent pain management doctor who will be willing to listen to me and come up with something that will work... and that won't raise the ire of the USCG med.

Anyone know of any good pain docs in the area who might be willing to just write for what I have>?

Thanks, (PM are fine of you rather not reply).

I am on "fiorocet"... I take one or 2 and crunch them in my teeth first... they work most of the time.

I get no relief for migraines from opiate drugs... NONE!

Yes, me neither. I have daily pain, that has gotten progressively worse since I was first in the Gulf (not sure I believe there is a connection).

I have tried 22 different medications over the years, and like you.. the opiate's are not the answer, and I am unwilling to go to the hydrocodone / Oxycontin route. I like the idea of being pain free, but not wiling to pay that price.

Would really love to find a good pain doctor that would listen, and work with me (without reaching for the top shelf stuff that leaves me too stoned to drive).

Anyone here have a good pain dr?

I went through migranes for several years before Dr. Packard headache specialist who is now is in Texas figured out that my blood pressure was like a roller coaster and when it spiked triggered the sickness. The headaches are very few now but once in a while I will get one when I eat something like MSG. If I were you, I would want to know exactly what is causing the headaches. They treated me for everything before figuring this out. I was hurting so bad that they could have pulled all of my teeth out and I would have allowed it. As for the USCG they are getting pickier about any illnesses. The last time I got a physical I read on the renewal application that they wanted to know if you had high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and even sleep apnea. So I think that if there is anyway that you can find some other kind of therapy, you will be better off to pass their physical. I sincerely wish you well since I understand how bad you can feel.
