Default Okaloosa County Regs??

Tried to approach the beach next to the Okaloosa Island peir in the boat, so we could eat at the crab trap/swamp or somewhere there but the life gaurds put a stop to this right now. As they acted like it was a breach of National Security, I was told that I had to maintian atleast 700 feet from the beach.

Guess my question is:
Is this the normal and how is one to know what the distance should be at a beach before you can anchor up.

I was under the impression that 100 yards off the beach was normal. Don't know for sure, but I've always maintained that looking for bait.
