Man, what a great thread. I am from the upstate of SC and I can say there are plenty of backwoods places up in the foothills and mountains of SC.
One story that comes to mind: My college roommate and I get this great idea that we want to raise goats on my parents property for some extra cash while we were going to school. Well, we keep having feral dogs show up and kill them so we decided to get a lama or two to protect them. I can't remember how we found these people, but they had two lamas for sale and lived up above Walhalla SC in the middle of nowhere. We get up there and the lady immediately asks us if we want to "burn one". After politely declining we proceed to try and catch the lamas for about an hour. While this was going on her husband (who ran a porta potty cleaning business) was pounding Budweiser and telling us how they use the lama crap to fertilize their pot plants. Anyway, we finally caught the two lamas and got out of there but that whole area is backwoods.
Oh, forgot to add. About six months after getting the goats, some guy from my roommates home town of Six Mile, SC tells him he will pay us $20 to have sex with one of our goats. I swear, I could not make this stuff up.
