All refineries produce non ethanol gasoline ( non-renewable fuel). The ethanol is blended before it ships out or it gets shipped to a blending company. Refineries must buy the ethanol (RINs) to blend it or send it to a company to blend it. The RINs are a mandatory purchase for the non-renewable fuel manufacturers. This was mandated by the government, as someone posted earlier, to gain corn lobbyist votes. This extra cost to the refineries is why non-ethanol prices are higher even though it is cheaper to produce.

I thought gasoline refined to be blended with ethanol was of lower octane rating than gasoline refined to be sold as straight gas?

Gasoline will have a RON ( research octane number) and a MON ( motor octane number) when it is refined. From there it will be blended to achieve a regular, mid-grade, premium or even higher octane number.

I don't doubt it, I'm just relaying the information provided to us by the man in charge of our local fuel depot during a walkthru and incident plan, told us nothing could be shipped by barge if it had ethanol and all his product was wth blended when it leaves his storage tanks and is loaded on tankers for delivery
