Default Late model truck info....

I'm looking to buy a late model truck to pull my camper. I'm considering all options, but thinking about a F-250 or F-350 with the 7.3. Anyone have real world experience on MPG for a 2003-2012 model? What would you buy with a budget of $12,500?

What size camper? My old bumper pull was 31.5 with 2 slides and weighed 7K. I pulled it with a 2010 and 2014 Chevy 1500 and got 9 mpg locally then through the mountains 7-8 mpg at worst. Now I have a 13.5K 5th wheel and pull it with GMC 2500 duramax and get 10-13 mpg. Aint pulled it to the mountains yet so no info there. I did pull our bumper pull with it before the 5th wheel and got 11-15 mpg so not a bunch of difference with the 5th wheel.

If your bumper pull is 7-8k I would stick to a half ton truck unless you plan on going cross country.

I believe 2004 or 2005 was the last year you could get a 7.3. I have one in a 1999 F350 dually. I can't really give you any fuel numbers but I can tell you that I have a superchips tuner on mine and change the tune according to what I am doing with it and it makes a big difference. Those engines typically run over 300k miles easily so don't be afraid if you find a clean truck with 150-200k on it, there is still a lot of life left in it. Those trucks are in demand but you should be able to find a single cab or super cab for your price range. A super crew is going to be 15-20 for one in good shape.

2003 was last year for 7.3. I think any truck will land between 10-13 towing.
