Hey man, I know it hurts, been there.

Doc said to drink a big glass of cranberry juice each day, so I have one in the morning and another at cocktail hour with a bit of rum mixed.

Seems to be working.

I've had two. The last one turned into the worst pain I could ever imagine and ended in the only trip I have ever taken in an ambulance. I woke up that day with what I thought was a back ache. I remember as I was getting dresssed thinking: Great, I've hurt my back some how and I have a full day of construction work with Habitat for Humanity scheduled for tomorrow! By the time I was half way to work the pain was so bad I had broken out in a sweat. By now I realized what it was but I still kept thinking I would just drink lots of water and get through it. By7:45the pain finally got so bad that I called my wife to come get me, knowing I had no business driving. Before she could get there I was lying on the floor, covered in sweat, and apparently very pale. I could not sit or stand, much less walk to the car. My co-workers called an ambulance. They gave me morphine on the way to the hospital. This worked for a very short time. I very rarely take pain meds so they usually do very well for me. Not this time. One of the last things I remember in the emergency room was the doctor saying: "Sir let go of my jacket!" as I was screaming for pain medication. The next thing I knew it was four hours later. (Massive amounts of demerall can be a wonderful experience.) They put a catheter in me and ran several liters of fluidthrough me and I passed the stone while in la la land. After it was over I got dressed and walked out of the hospital like nothing had happened. Before I left I apologized to the nurse and doctor because I realized I had been a real jerk. Fortunately, they thought it was kind of funny. The nurse and doctor were both women. With a big smile and a wink to the doctor the nurse made the comment about nowI know what it's like to give birth.

Ouch... wife gets them every six months... nasty little sand spur looking things... I suspect they will do a study on yours and let you know if there is anything you can avoid in your diet to prevent them... Unfortunately for my wife, green vegetables cause hers... She drinks beer every time she thinks they're ready to move, otherwise, she doesn't drink...:hotsun

I know no one wants to hear the bad the news-- but here a re a few things that help cause kidney stones::: 1) BEER!!!, 2) CAFFINE!!! especially mt dew higher levels in it 3) EXCESS amounts of MILK!!!

Cranberry juice is the best thing to flush out your kidneys-- I know the flavor sucks but you can always buy the cocktail thats mixed with other flavors such as grape, apple, strawberry, ect they are much better.

Please take my advice-- cut out the bad, cut in the good, and ask the doc what else you can do. My sister in law has gotten them for yrs, she used to only drink mt dew and now she only drinks water and kool-aid- she is only 29 and has had this procedure done as well back in Feb. because the doc has to take good care of her right kidney-- her stones were so often that she has one the size of a quarter in her left kidney that killed it 3 yrs ago and shut it down completely. So please take any and all advice you may receive not matter how little or big cause your kidneys is something we all take for granted that we all desperately need thanks for listening Have a good one!!!

thanks for the advice... im about to go to my pre-op appointment now, for the second operation. the past 2 days have been tolerable when i dont have to use the bathroom. hopefully friday the doctor will get in there, and get the thing (that is apparently about twice the size he originally thought) once and for all.

thanks for your kind words and prayers. but please dont stop. my wife is having a fiberatanoma (sp) removed on thursday which will also be general anesthesia. then i go in friday morning for my operation. so keep us in your prayers and thanks again for the support through this crap!

I used to have kidney stones, and Contrary to popular belief, i solved the problem by drinking MORE milk and eating more dairy products, the Doctors all say to stay off of them BUT, what is happening is the body is not getting enough calcium and is actually stripping it from your bones and it settles in your Kidneys. If you give your body what it needs, it won't try to get it from where you don't want it to. I haven't had a stone probolem since 1984.. Proof is in the pudding.. Good luck!!!

very very good point. i probably wont change my diet much (i already eat plenty of cheese, drink lots of milk etc.) one thing i might change is add a glass of cranberry juice every day to help flush my kidneys (from what ive read, it seems to be healthy overall anyways) and try to drink plenty of water as well.
