Default Idiot Encounter: Pensacola Dog Beach

Took my dogs to the dog beach in Bayview today as it is their favorite place. they love to swim, fetch in the water and go out to the floating platform and jump off into the water. I have 2 twin Golden Retrievers one boy and one girl 1.5yrs old, and my mom has a 4 yr old Golden retriever.

anyways, we were there for over an hour with no problems, until a guy and a woman came in with a big 150 pound or so dog and the lady was holding a pig the entire time( yes a pig like oink oink).

anyway, we were off to ourselves throwing tennis balls and Frisbee for our dogs and this dog runs up and steals the frisbee from my dog and breaks it, no big deal it happens. after that I tried to move my dogs away and in the deeper water since this dog couldn't go into deeper water. well my mother was at the waters edge throwing a tennis ball out into the water for her golden to retriever. she had a ball in her hand and this dog ran up to her and stole the ball out of her hand and nip her in the hand, didn't break the skin. again it happens, but the dog would not leave my mother alone after the guy having to come over and grab him away from her a few more times. I kept telling him he needs to control his dog and to not let it hassle my mother like that. I then had to put myself in between the dog and my mother and take control of the dog my self by telling him no and putting my knee out if he started rushing us.

I finally had enough and decided to start washing my dogs and go home. that finally got the dog to go off somewhere else. someone else came up to me and asked what happened as it was their first time there. I told the person that the dog wasn't aggressive, it just didn't have any manners. apparently this set the guy off as he heard me talking to the other person. he chased down his dog and left while saying some choice words to me while leaving.

I ignored him for the most part, but when he said "some dogs just don't have manners", I replied with "it's the owners fault, don't blame it on the dog." I know i shouldn't have said that, but i was pretty upset that my 57 year old mother who is on medicine for blood pressure had bruises on her hand and the guy continued to let his dog harass her. anyway i think he said something about meeting him outside or something, the lady with the pig called me a Pr*ck as she passed while i quietly washed my dogs.

Here's where it gets real interesting, Apparently they were waiting for me outside of the dog park, windows down watching us wash the dogs, I was aware of them, but didn't pay them any attention other then always knowing where they were. i don't know if they said anything , but they were starring us down and obviously trying to intimidate me. I guess they got tired of watching me wash my dog and let some kids help with washing my dogs as they finally left out of sight. I told my mom to continue washing the last dog as i took the others to the car. I checked out the area and made sure they left, but grabbed my PM40 from the center console and tucked it in to my swim trunk waistband at the 1 oclock position, just to be safe in case this knuckle head came back looking for a fight. I then pulled the car around and escorted my mother and her dog to the car and left without incident luckily. I will now be carrying in the bag we bring instead of leaving it in the car.

Sorry for the long post, I was just very not happy with this individual and then trying to blame it on the dog instead of taking the blame for not training his dog. If i was him i would of realized after the first incident or the nipping part that my dog was too excited and removed the dog or at least taken the dog to the other side of the huge dog beach area. I'm glad the whole thing didn't have to escalate to a worse encounter, I wouldn't have used my gun unless he had a weapon, but I don't mess around when anything that happens to my mother. I lost my dad this year and she's all I have left.

If this person is on PFF, I'll gladly help you train you dog, my dogs aren't the best trained, but they are far from out of control. you have a responsibility to train your dog if its going to be in public and is 150 pounds!

Sounds like the people need to take Dog Obedience 101. It is more for people than dogs. Sorry you had a bad time but hopefully the Goldens enjoyed the swim.

Sorry about the hassle you went thru. I often wonder about people who choose to keep pigs as pets. This is how I like my pig...
