With out a doubt it is a ground hog. Used to hunt them as a kid. Not to bad eating if cooked right.

I think I'll just take your word for that Mark. I've eaten some strange things but I usually am pretty sure I know what I'm eating.

Groundhogs like to sun themselves. We used to watch them from a window while eating breakfast. Interesting little critters. Lucky you didn't spook the fat little guy before taking his photo.

Groundhog, a badger would've whipped your cat's ass.

A good sized Woodchuck at the upper end.
They can really tear up a dog and a cat would be easy to tear up if it were cornered.

One time the farm mutt (shepard/beagle mix I think) came on one in an open field away from its hole.
Dog circled it awhile and then dove in for the kill.
Woodchuck met him nose to nose but the woodchuck got the dog right thru his nose with his rodent style front teeth.
Woodchuck clamped down and hung on while the dog was spinning around trying to throw the WC off.
That went on like 30 seconds before the WC let go.
That dog never ever messed with any WC ever again after that.
