Default Identify these turtles, and what's this?

Cleaning up on a farm, I had to stop dozing and re-locate these two turtles (different times). Are these just regular terrapins, or maybe gopher turtles? The darker shelled one looks like he had some old injury to his shell, just to the left of his head.

The white grub looking thing was in the dirt under some yaupon bushes I was pushing up. They seem to be a rhizome of some type, not a grub.

I have always called them box turtles but probably not correct. Walked up on two once and they appeared to be making baby turtles.

Not sure, but I don't think they're the elusive dick-necked turtles we have around here.
