there are a lot of electronics out there if a person was serious about their security.
Infrared Beams higher than your dog that could give a little chime when interrupted , Pressure switches under a mat at your walk way , gate , or door , Motion detectors , Etc.
Cameras are always a help. you can see a smaller camera in the back ground of my mail box picture that keeps an eye on my mail Box and its cam.
only a persons imagination limits their security , and how much Security means to that individual.

couple of good points made...and no, I do not go armed at all times. In fact, I rarely go armed anywhere. I do not have a CCW permit, and I do not even own a holster for any of my pistols. Most my weapons are kept secure in a gun safe, with trigger locks....damn kids and safety !

I do keep a pistol, and a shotgun out, but not loaded. There are some strategically placed cache's of ammunition of the appropraite caliber / guage in the room with the guns. ( magazine in the night stand, desk drawer, above door frame, out of sight, and out of reach of kids )

And, for His Name, I am reminded of one of the "Murphy's Rules of Combat"....make it hard for the enemy to get in, and it's hard for you to get out. Also I am assuming you are more elderly than I am, and at a greater risk of falls, and injuries. As a paramedic, I can tell you it's a pain in the ass accessing a normal, non fortified home when a PT can't get to the door, your house is gonna be more of a challange !!

HisName,

Basic electronic surveillance is common in most newer homes. The next step up is monitored surveillance, followed by what you have described and then some. You made a very good point at the end of your post when you said "...how much security means to that individual". That's why the threat level, real or perceived, neds to be evaluated and mitigating actions implemented, on an individual basis.

I have no kids and 99% of the time there is one ready at arms length in the house. I use to keep pistol on night stand then realized if woken out of dead sleep probably couldn't hit shit so now I just keep the Benelli at bed side just point and pull.

5 Best lines of defense

#1 A good guard dog, hes listing when your asleep and away, there are easier houses to get in too then to have to fight off a pissed off dog..

#2 Front and back door surveillance camera, there cheap these days, u don't have to have them recording just have them on in your favorite room
(the man cave)

#3 a gun, don't be caught staring a burglar in the eyes with out looking down a barrel

#4 Good locks not some cheap credit card swipe and open doors.

#5 Gate locks its a pain in the ass to throw tvs over fences

i have all these, and we sleep well at night, even when iam away at work for a week my girl friend sleeps in piece knowing no one will be slipping intoo the house at night..

Everyone loves to say I will shoot that bastard but its easier said than done. Don't get me wrong I hope you do get to your weapon and unload to protect yourself and love ones but once that adrenaline starts flowing and nerves get rattled loading aiming and shooting a gun becomes very difficult.

I also have the gate, good alarm and 5 dogs. As much as I would hate to kill someone I would meet him/her with my friend Mr. Samuel Colt. I would rather have trouble sleeping at night then the alternative of eternal sleep.

I'll never have to worry about that....if they are stupid enough to try and get past my boy (Buster) and his nephew (Smokey)....they will get ate up....then I just back them up....and both are very nice dogs....but hit the door like they were coming through it........most people that knock.... just walk away....before I get there.
