Default help save my lawn

Ok, the Trugreen thread got me thinking.

I want some help from our experts here at PFF

I recently started maintaining the yard and living in a room at my parents rental, my lawn... looks disgusting, probably 75% weeds, several dead spots etc, the previous tenant was a fixer upper and was so good at taking care of the house we never really worried about him or came by here, when he told us he was leaving I came out to check on the house, being winter, I knew I was gonna have some challenges, but I didn't think the yard was as bad as it is now that it's getting warm out again.

What is the best way to get my centipede grass looking good again? My dad put some Scotts Weed and Feed down, I'm not sure which variation, but the area he put it in, it killed everything. Can I get some help saving this place?

Where are you located? I would start by spraying a higher percentage 2-4-D product like "crossbow" reason I asked where are you at is that I have a boom sprayer and I would be more than willing to come over and spray your yard. You can buy crossbow at Home Depot for around $30 a quart which would be more than enough for most yards. Crossbow is very effective and it won't harm your grass. After you spray the yard the next week I would come back with one more spray, then triple 13 the following week...

As mullet said, 2-4-D will kill the broad leaf weeds and not harm the grass as long as its not mixed too Hot. I am maintaining several acres of Hay pasture and applying 2-4-d at a quart per acre for weed control.
If the weeds are as bad as you stated, 75% coverage, you might be better off to kill everything with Round-up (Glyphosphate} and re-sod the yard. You will have to re-spray several times to totally eliminate weeds, as the seeds lay dormant and will come back for a couple of years.
If you need some Round-up, 52% with surfactant, I can get it for 30 bucks a gallon. A gallon will kill 4 acres.

I am going to kill 20 acres of centipede the first of the week with 52% round-up to replant with Pensacola Bahia seed for Pasture Hay. If you can find a sod cutter real quick, you can have all the centipede you want for free.

Pull a soil sample and send it of 1st. It will tell you your fert. needs and rates for the year. The center number of fertilizer is phosphorous. This is posionous to centipede at certain levels. I would be very careful putting a 10-10-10 down. Most people burn there laws when they do this. Spray it with Atrazine for broad leaf control now and with image for grass and sedge control in about a month. If not pulling a sample get 15-0-15 with a little iron in it. Put it down now, a little in July and again in Sept. It could take a couple of growing seasons to recover.
Hope this helps

I've heard good stuff bout crossbow! Gonna have to try it myself cause I had a good looking yard that is now being taken over by some tall weed that has a large leaf at the base that ends up killing all my grass within an 8 inch diameter!!!
