Manhatten can be expensive, but you can find good food at reasonable prices. We went there several times in recent years. If the guy at the door is wearing a tuxedo, be prepared to spend some bucks. Read the menu before you go in, and see the prices. As for tourist places, please go to Ground Zero. It is emotional, at least it was for me. But, I know someone who died there. Go to the top of the Empire State Building. There a million other things to do. Take in a play. The transportation system is very good. Learn to use it.

We are not renting a car. I heard that was suicide.

There are a lot of places . Look for bars with a menu or a pizza place, In N.Y. they sell by the slice or a whole pie try china town and little Italy .If you go to bklyn and end up at coney island try nathens and look in the aquarium by the board walk, the botanical garden ,the bklyn museum of natural history ,prospect park zoo, oriental gardens all of which are free to enter, By the way there is a cave in prospect park where a skirmish was fought I think in the civil war, most people don't know that but in the park there are some plaqug's left that tell of this . The cave is right behind the rear of the zoo.And if you try the pizza the best place is bklyn you must try a brick oven one . Also I think they still have horse rides in prospect park on a trail around the park.Don't forget the Statue of Liberty You can eat at a pizza store ,veal cutlet parm. chicken parm ,ect just enjoy your self.

If you like pizza, you MUST go to Lombardi's on the corner of Spring and Mulberry street in Little Italy. It is the birthplace of pizza in the US. They still cook the pizza in the same coal-burning oven since it opened in 1903. Their pizza is amazing. Tons of history there, and it was cool thinking about all the mafia guys who got whacked in the restaurant that I was eating in. Another good restaurant in Little Italy is Umberto's. It has been a while since I was last there. Not much left of Little Italy, it has been whittled down to just a few blocks with Chinatown encircling it. Lots of good Chinese restaurants, though I don't remember any specific restaurant names.

I am a big Italian food fan, so I am partial to Italian. If you want upscale, but truly authentic Italian, go to any of Mario Batali's restaurants. They are pricy, but he has great Italian food at Babbo, or Lupa, and excellent Italian seafood at Esca.

For quality steaks, you cannot go wrong with either Gallagher's, Smith and Wollensky, or Morton's. These are 3 of the best in the country.

All that I have mentioned, except for Lombardi's, are somewhat expensive. Of course, since it is New York, you can find a great bite to eat on just about every corner of Manhattan. Sometimes the best food can be found in small family-owned diners that very few tourists even know about. Just cruise through some of the neighborhoods, and find something that can give you a taste of the local flavor.

The best food I had there was on wall st. Little Italian joint were all the suits go for lunch. It was across the st from Battery Park. food is very expensive there. $15 bucks for a burger and fries that aint no better than a Wendy's .99 burger.

Thanks for all the replies guys and gals. I think I am armed with a little know how now. I like to eat what the local population eats and not get dragged into what the tourists do just because I don't know any better. I will be busy from about 9-5 each day, but should have enough daylight in the afternoon to get around to see the city and find some good eats. I just hate paying an arm and a leg for a reasonable dinner and a cold one.
