In my time as a fan... Dirty Dale E. Sr.

Previous to him... MANY may have been far superior... I am getting a kick out of the documentaries made for each driver in the hall of fame.

Default Nascar

I have to take David Pearson, and he deserved to be included in the first induction. He won 105 times in 574 starts, and has a higher winning percentage than Richard Petty.
Right behind him would be my favorite driver of all time, Bobby Allison.
I can remember Bobby and Donnie coming into 5 Flags on a Friday night and lighting the place up.
Good times.

EG, The first and most memorable NASCAR moment for me occurred on a televised (I think was before flag to flag coverage) race possible wide world of sports... This was likely '74-5 or 6.

A driver came into the pits, possibly Petty and they handed him a cup of something to drink on a pole from pit wall... He took a swig and when he tossed it out, it flipped thru the air barely losing any liquid and landed upright on the ground... I was a young child and thought that was the coolest thing and even at that age I was impressed by the camera technology for capturing the moment.

Dale #3 E. Senior, also.

I think a part of me died the day he did. I was a huge fan.

Jimmie Johnson is by far the most consistent. I was a Pearson fan (though not a big NASCAR fan). But Petty was the best DRIVER in my opinion.

I understand the near time feelings for Number 3, but his career was shortened way too early.

Just like Tiger Woods today, if he cannot comeback from injuries and "whatever" he won't surpass Jack as the best of all time.

So Richard Petty is the best DRIVER, Jimmy Johnson, the best TEAM...

Jim

(casual NASCAR fan)

You left one out Floater,
And although I didn't condone his behavior, TIM RICHMOND would have gone deep into the archives and record books in NASCAR.
