so I dont have a computer at home and have missed out on the fun of this ,and I would just like to add a few things from a few quotes.

{ The books were written by an antheist with a mission to influence little kids. There's no denying that.

I'm not sure Hollywood made the movie from the book for those same motives. I think they are searching for the next "Lord of the Rings". When they made the Chronicles of Narnia it was for the same reason, not to promote Christianity.

With that said, I won't go nor would I take my kids to see it. Regardless of Hollywood's motives, I won't support that guy or his stories

Just got back from seeing the movie. My eyes didn't burn out of their sockets, and my 13 year old still believes in god. FWIW, I did not see anything anti-god or anti-anything, other than anti-totalitarian. It was a good vs evil story and the good guys (or at least those portrayed as good guys in this episode) won. Either way, it was very entertaining...kind of a cross between Narnia and Lord of the Rings. I give it two thumbs up. }

so it been stated that the writter of the golden compass is a devote atheist but did you know that J.R. Tolkin and the writter of the Chronical of Narnia C.S. Lewis are both devote Christians and you can find there religious tones in their books and movies.

just alittle info

And one more thing. I didn't attack God or his word. I pointed out the simple facts. You believe in somethign that isn't and hasn'tand can't be proven. Your belief is based on faith. You choose your faith over what I see as reason and logic and that doesn't make you stupid and it doesn't mean I'm attacking your God. What it does mean is that you have begun to either mistake the argument or to change strategies by assuming the role of persecuted. But you weren't being persecuted and your smug offer to pray for me and the threat of me losing your business - very Christlike!

Oh, and thanks for the prayers! For what its worth I appreciate it. If you really did it.
Hal, where I take issue is when you trivialize the beliefs of a majority of this forum and of this Country for that matter (http://www.teachingaboutreligion.org...0Big%20Picture) by saying that we believe in fairytales. Religion is something that people hold sacred and something many folks base their lives around. Now I don't know you but for the posts of yours that I have read. And from these posts I have learned that you are an opinionated individual that is not scared to share that opinion with others. This is a good thing as long as it is tempered with wisdom and respect. I did not mistake the arguement nor am I changing strategies. I guess the point of my post is a "constructive criticism" of your arguement concerning Christianity. The fasted way to make people stop listening is to trivialize their beleif system. But in the end you are entitled to your opinion and the manner in which you express it. Oh and I reread my original post and I could see how that may have come acroos as smug. For that I apologize and for the record I do stand by that offer.

Now that this thread has been seriously derailed, I am signing off. I guess its bound to happen when the topic of religion is discussed on an internet forum full of opinionated individuals.Oh and Hal, if you ever want to get a beer and discuss fishing or construction (or politics and religion for that matter), I'm game. :letsdrink

Anytime, my friend. Many people are afraid to voice their opinions for some reason. i think some are worried their true beliefs and feelings will cause them to lose business or respect. Me, I'm not going to hide to gain something by disingenuous means. I enjoy political and religious discussions/arguments and what I learn from them. Good and honest people can disagree in a heated manner and still take something positive from the conversation.

As far as the movie goes, its rated pg13. Don't take your kids to it if you don't want them influeced by its themes. And, for what its worth, I don't want my kid subjected to indoctrination of any sort if its slipped in a movie that's not clearly labelled. She can make her own decisions after she's been given the benefit of her family's guidance and input. You do what you can to prepare them adn then, its up to them.

Correct, thats why I said:

"I'm not sure Hollywood made the movie from the book for those same motives. I think they are searching for the next "Lord of the Rings". When they made the Chronicles of Narnia it was for the same reason, not to promote Christianity."

I think Hollywood is constantly searching for the next Lord of the Rings, Star Wars,etc. A good epic tale of good vs evil is very interesting and can translate to a lot of money. I didn't watch Narnia, no particular reason. But as I said, I won't be supporting the Golden Compass because I'm not going to support that guy. Not because I'm afraid I will leave the theator an anthiest. I'm just not going to empower him, and watching that movie in my opinion will empower him. I know I watch other movies that empower other beliefs that I don't agree with. But hey, thats my decision.

I don't condemn others for seeing the movie. As I said, I'm not convinced Hollywood made the movie for the same reasons the book was written. And I wouldn't be surprised if the the anti-god theme was watered down in the movie. If you like those epics, it could be a good movie. But at the same time, there's no reason to condemn those who don't agree with this guy to inform others of the theme behind the movie.
