A lot depends on exactly what you want to do. If you are truly in to the touristy aspect of the Smokey Mountains, go to Gatlinburg. If not, go to the south side of the mountains, also known as the quiet side.

The best tubing/rafting will be the Nantahala or Ocoee River. Both are controlled by dams and the Ocoee is dramatically affected by water releases.

Go to Mountain Crossings on Blood Mountain, really cool place that the App. Trail crosses right through. There are so many historic towns in that area that don't get much mention. Gatlinburg is kinda like Destin whereas Bryson City, Morgantown, etc.. are more like Navarre.

If you are traveling with a bunch of teens they very well may get bored in some of the smaller more historic cities but I would definitely check out the Nantahala Gorge.

I have to second the Nantahala Gorge, my wife and I went to Gatlinburg on our honey moon and had a blast. We went white water rafting in Nantahala Gorge and loved it, you cannot go wrong going there.

Check out Cades Cove. One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.. See all sorts of game in their natural habitat. If youre into hiking lots of awesome trails there too..

If you don't mind a little hiking check out Abrahm falls located near Cades Cove. There is also another waterfall located in the national forest called Laural Falls, this one is a pretty easy hike with a paved path. You won't be disappointed when you see it, you can hangout there, and wade/ take pics. Don't waste your time on the attractions like ripleys museum, or the earthquake exhibit. The space needle in down town Gatlinburg is a pretty neat place to get a good look of the mountains, and don't bother going to Ober Mountain, other than the tram ride its like going back into the 90's. Dolly wood is way overpriced, and had a few highlights, but not worth the money. Be sure to eat at Calhouns BBQ joint, best ribs yet. Hope this helps.
