Default Fire Ant invasion...

Over the past couple of weeks my lawn has been invaded by fire ants. I have used the white powder sold at Lowe's to try and erradicate them but they just seem to move their ant hill around. If my lawn wasn't nice I would drench the hills and set them on fire...

Anybody have any good ideas?

the white powder (orthene) has always worked for me but only if I walked the entire yard and treated every single mound. it's not 100% but it's worked better than True Green which I've tried on several occasions with dismal results. I've tired everything under the sun and never been able to find something that completely got rid of them. After 15 yrs and tons of money intrying to beat them, I just accepted it as part of living in sandy soil and you have to routinely stay on top of it..

Talstar will get rid of them. I swear by that stuff.

I'll agree that Talstar works best. But it seems ANY treatment just sorta moves the nest around. The nest can go down four feet and spread 8 feet or so in any direction. It can have20 queens.

All you can really do is treat each mound till you force them somewhere else. Like your neighbors yard.

Here's a good read...

I've found that dumping gasoline -- lots and lots of gas -- on the mound and wadding up a page of newspaper with a rock inside, lighting it on fire and throwing it from a good distance might not be the most effective way, but it sure as hell is fun.

I've tried and have had success with the Amdro granules. A little goes a long way.

I heard that if you put corn meal on the mound it will kill the queen. They eat the meal, but they can't digest it???

Let me know if it works!

I had an in vasion last year used Over and out bought at Lowes cost about $40 for my yard but did the trick. I just followed the instructions on the bag. had to use a spreader it treats the whole lawn. probably sent them to the neighbor.

The white powder does work if you have dry conditions. The powder sticks to the ants body hair via static electricity. The queens grooms the ant and ingests the powder.
