Default EMERGENCY PLUMBER!!!

Came back to the house about an hour ago and water was flowing from my house all the way down Scenic Hw. Placed a call to ECUA they said they would send someone but that was over an hour ago and the water is still flowing. I dug up where the leak is coming from it is the pipe and valve right next to the meter.

Question:

1) Does anyone know how to shut off the water?

2) Should I get a plumber on the way now or wait for ECUA to show up..

BTW Having several people coming over for New Years

Thanks

Shawn

You can turn the water off at the meter. You would generally need a special tool, but with the right pair of pliers, you should be able to get it.

Hope it's not on your side of the meter.

I'm sure they have stopped the water flowing on this by now, but.

I just use a pair of channel lock's or vise grips.

Now here is my point. I was part of the new computer reading system that ECUA has going on. My area was the first in town. They gave use a 90 day notice that this would be happening.

What they do is change the whole meter. Your meter is then LOCKED! You can not get to it and you have no way to turn the water off at the street.

So with the 90 day advance warning I went to Lowes and bought a small bag of gravel, a sprinkler valve box and a ball valve.

This was all installed on my side of the meter aprox 12in from the meter.

NOTE: you will not be able to do this easy after the new electronic meter is installed. DO IT BEFORE they install that meter.

ECUA is slowly making this change all over town. This will save them money in the long run. They ride around in the truck and never get out. Turn on a laptop computer and download the readings. They have already cut back on meter readers and the ones that are there are expected to read a LOT more meters.

I just thought this was worth passing on. I did mine and helped 2 of my neighbors do theirs before the meter change.

The ball valve and sprinkler box is a good thing to have anyway! They are required on new construction. Technically your not suppose to touch the meter anyway, but its not enforced! If anyone cares to do it, it would be a good idea, you can easily turn off another valve much quicker than you can some of the meters, whether its old and stiff, deep, or up against the meter box(impossible almost without a meter key!)...

Hope you got it all fixed!
