When I was a kid, we owned a restaurant. Someone left $.35 for a tip with one of our waitresses. She followed him to the parking lot and gave it back to him. Told he he obviously needed it more than she did.

I have 2 family members who have worked food service just about thier whole life my cousin and her husband.

so I hear all the horror stories...Allthough I have gone to eat at a steakhouse here (which shall remain nameless) and the steak and service I recieved were so good I asked my waitress to take a 10$ tip straight to the cook for my steak because it was perfect. (He later came out to chat with us and ask if anything could have made the meal he prepared any better) as a young up and comming chef he did quite well.

Our waitress/ waiter allways asks do you need anything for your steak....Our reply " Not if its cooked right"

I usually tip +- 20%, it depends on the service. Poor service, around 10% to 12%. Good service, 20% and then some. But I always tip.

This is kinda off the actual topic but I normally leave my tip on my card. I always feel funny walking away without leaving anything on the table. Sometimes I even tell the server that I'm leaving the tip on the card.

I guess my question is, should I tell the server that i'm leaving the tip on the card or will they know? Sometimes I'll even leave a small tip on the table and another tip onmy card.

About 6 years ago I was laid off(computer job outsourced to India) in Austin TX and had to move to Tulsa OK and deliver pizza for a year to pay the rent.

In north Tulsa which is the 'hood' for those who do not know the area. I once had 17 deliveries in a row, it was snowing and not 1 penny tip.

Living off tips teaches you to pay for service, also to spot the non tippers. A crack dealercovered inbling and ho's will tip big to impress the 'ladies'. Same guy would give you nothing if alone.

I never stooped to what some of my fellow delivery drivers did (but was sorely tempted):$1 worth of pennies thrown on a non-tippers lawn will get his attention next time he mows I am told.

If you cannot afford to eat out and tip for service, don't go. Eat at home: and if you get a pizza delivery in the snow/rain/heat tip the guy too.

I've left a poor tip twice. One of those times was actually last week when we got horrible service at an applebees in hattiesburg. Party of 10 soldiersthat did not receive there food for close to an hour and a half. We talked to the manager, whom said he would take care of it, after saying the order was just put in 20min ago. Yet the server had taken our orders and given us drinks, which were now empty glasses, over an hour ago. I was pissed. Most of all because I received my bill with the gratuity already added, and no credit for the bad food and poor service. The weird thing is not everyone else had it added. I scratched it out and rewrote the total, although it probably wont matter. What I think happened is the same thing I did about 5years ago when I wasa server, that waitress forgot to put in the order. And she never once apologized for anything. She definitely needs to find another job. This was the second time I've left a bad tip. The other time was with my wife and kids and my wife was so mad she said "you better not leave her a tip" I can't even remember when or where it was, but I remember my wife was hot.

I will say pizza guys always make out when they come to my house. If we do order pizza I normally go pick it up, but if by chance I dont then it's 4-5 bucks. I always feel bad for them and can't see myself giving less then $4 even though my bill wont be anymore than 15.

By the way I mean pizza guys always make out on T-I-P-S nothing else jackasses oke

Saturday I was at Applebee's and didn't leave a tip. I couldn't justify giving the waiter anything for the service she gave me. Maybe I'm wrong, but dang,

typically I tip 15% though. on a smaller bill I'll tip a little more. And when I goto the small diners where there's one waiter busting her butt I'll tip her far more than 15%. She's waiting twice the tables than Applebees (or wherever) with no food delivery person or whatever. And her bill is usually smaller so a 15% would be less than Applebees for more work.

the flip side of this is also when they FORCE you in to a tip for a larger party than if you wre just with your family. I've found that at establishments who tack on an automatic %15 you usually get truly shitty service(some are pretty good, but most are bad) because the wait staff KNOWS they are gonna get something even without being "polite" or "prompt". I tip well when I eat out with my family but if they TELL me what my tip will be I generally will walk out. Standard 15% is easy...just look at the tax for your bill in P'cola and double that amount. If the service was good, go a little higher....if bad, for every minute of bad service(like my glass being left empty) the tip goes down at an accelerated rate. Good wait staff is hard to find anymore. And what happened to saying "thank you" or "your welcome"to customers instead of this "no problem" crap you get now?? That just irks my ass....... ahhhh, the soap box is coming out, I better quit!!

Well, I will respond to this before I start drinking to much. LOL.........

I noticed a FEW things but will not respond to them. ONE I will respond to is Bill, Just above me. You may be right about they think they have 18% COMING TO THEM. One thing though, Let the manager know you HAD SHITTY SERVICE. No excuse for that.

AND FINALLY, Give me a frigging break about some server pissed about what someone left them. SOMETIMES it happens and yes you have cheap MF's. The servers work there arses off to please a customer, or at least that is what I have noticed in our resturant. Yes, the oldest or more senior servers get the best tables but there is a reason why, SERVICE. You can't have a table of 25 going out of the door unhappy and telling everyone how shitty the service was. Then newbies will get the 2 tops and work there way up.

Here is what REALLY grips my goat though. This post was posted about someone not tipping a server WHAT THEY THOUGHT THEY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN. I have 4 tip %'s: 10,15,20 and NONE. All based on the SERVICE, not the food. They food will help the server make more money but service in the key to me.

I hate to hear a server talk about tippers. I'm a cook and I do it because I LOVE TO DO IT. It pisses me off though to hear about a server talking about a $20 tip on a $150 check. HELL dude, I have to work over 2 hours to make that much. In that 2 hours I have put out over 100 plates of food. You waited on 20 tables during that time frame and racked in about $150 in tips, lets go low and say $100. Well, you made $100 and I made $20.

HELL, One instance is at the ALLEN JACKSON concert. NO server made less the $200 and the BEST made over $400 in tips on a 5 hour shift. HELL, I have to work a week and a half to make that much. SO, All you complain about tips REALLY need to say how much you REALLY make. I don't mind tipping bar tenders but I be damned if I am gonna tip you a $1 for every beer you bring me.

Just ask APRIL (birdnest daughter), She knows that she is gonna get $5 to $10 bucks every time, depends on how many beers I drink. WHY, Well, 1st of all I NEVER have to ask for a beer. I walk in the door and she knows what I drink. She PAYS ATTENTION and has one sitting beside me when I only have 1 inch of beer left in the bottle. I don't even have to order my food, After two times she knows What I eat and WHEN I want it. KNOW THAT IS SERVICE. Not bringing out my water and food.

Off my soap box because I'm getting pissed thinking about it. :banghead:banghead

Oh yea, one more thing. After reading all the post from the servers on this thread it explains WHY YOU DON'T MAKE AS MUCH AS YOU THINK YOU SHOULD, and maybe rightfully so.

Telling folks to stay home on mothers day because they don't tip good. What they hey.

Saying they crawl from out under the rocks on Mothers day, Again what the hey. I guess you just gave the best service with THAT TYPE OF ATTITUDE.

You give me shitty service I give you a shitty tip IF ANY.
