Where is the "dredge" emoticon for digging up an old thread?

If you are a business and you don't accept credit cards these days you are pretty much commiting suicide.

First, you are saying that the quality of your product would not support tacking on a couple of extra cents to cover the credit card fee.

Second, you are in denial of one of the facts of modern life...that cash worked fine when having a couple of $20's in your wallet would get you through a day of shopping around and eating a meal or two, but now, to get by on a cash-only basis you would have to be walking around with a couple $100 bucks in your pocket all the time. It may be just me, but the only time I have that much cash on me is if I'm heading to the flea market, pawn shops or planning on buying something from an individual. I'm not planning on haggeling over the cost of a meal when I go out to eat, but if that's an option, then I'll start carrying cash.

Third, if you think you are not loosing business then you are in double denial because, unless I'm in the minority, the first thing I look at before I walk into a resturant is what credit card emblems they have on their door. No card emblems...then it's back to the car and down the road to someplace else.

The impression I get of places that don't take cards is that they are operating on a bare bones budget and (especially in the case of resturants) I have to wonder what other things they are skimping on in their desperation to make a profit. Either that, or their business model is to be competative by conducting a large part of their business off-the-books, which equates to little accountability for the quality of their services.

Just my $0.02 (do you take mastercard?)

Funny how this thread by Jspooney was about our restaurant not taking plastic in the first few months we were open. Never saw or met him in the two years we have been open and I guess it didn't matter whether we took cash or plastic anyhow. Not for me to make a rant or anything mind you. Our receipts are about 2/3 plastic and the balance cash. It all spends the same to me.

Horse crap...credit card fees are about to raise and it's gonna hit the retailer...so Hookey you kinda contradict yourself in regards to carrying cash to pay someone in person or to go to a pawn shop or flea market...you'll shop at those places with cash but those of us that are trying to trim
Our costs so that WE CAN provide you with a good product with a reasonable cost are second rate...wow

When I owned the butcher shops I always rounded the total down to the nearest dollar web someone pause with cash...if someone offers to pay for true services now with cash I trim a little off...and yes I have a credit card machine and yes I pay about 400.00 per month in fees!

you mean you do not stash a little cash in your vehicles? half of all my dealings is in cash
even today I bought gas a the thumb thumb airport / 29 and the card would not work so I go inside and their machine was down period ! cash only
without cash it was no gas.
besides as long as people deal with cash then they can deal amongst themselves without government interference. from garage sales to the local farmer who sells his goods.
when we do become a cashless society the Government will have complete control and monitor your every move and corruption will be 100% and tax you to death
myself , there are many things i only buy with cash. CASH IS FREEDOM. JMO

Bonsai, what makes you think I haven't been to your restaurant? You weren't there when I came to eat. I actually did bring my entire office there and it was your wife waited on us. If you are doing 2/3 of your business with plastic then shouldn't I get a sandwich or something for bringing you more business by bringing this to your attention.

Badazzchef, I re-read the first few pages and I noticed that I said we did not take any electronic giving. That was true at the time but I started to think about it and realized that I was wrong in my thinking. Giving is a matter of the heart, not of the method. We are no longer a cash society. Haven't been in a very long time. We have added an electronic giving option at our church and you might be surprised at how many people use it and were actually thrilled at the option. Yes, it cost some money in fees, but we live in 2011. Digital money is not going away. Cash is not freedom. Cash us actually more risky. You lose it and it is gone. Use a card and you have several protections and ways of tracking your spending.
Several opinions on this I am sure, this one is simply mine.

jspooney I know your not addressing me and I do not want to impose but as an old school person who has attended many denominations in the south I would think that an ATM in a church would be a whole lot worse than a cash only eating establishment.

to be quiet honest ATM's in a church brings up visions of the money changer incident where Jesus himself lost his temper , flipped over tables and ran them all out.

just a thought. good topic BTW . It is good when people of different views can exchange their way of thinking even if they are very far apart

LOL, not to worry, I'm not talking about an ATM in the church. You also have to interpret that passage in it's correct context. The issue was a matter of the heart, not a matter of practice or procedure. You're up late, aren't you? Then again, so am I.
