Default Camping at F.P

Anyone been camping at Fort Pickens before? If so I have a few questions for ya..

Where exactly can you camp, Next to the water or inland?

Can you have fires?

How far of a hike is it from where you park to the sites?

Is it worth it?

Thanks! :usaflag

one word of caution, be knowledge about the memorial day weekend before planning a trip then. Had a friend new to the area who came to work one day all exicted because he got a camping spot for his family during Memorial Day Weekend. Everybody just sat there quitly until someone asked him if he new about that particular weekend.

Most of them rainbow warriers head east, but do get around. I think its seven miles over to pickens from the gate. There is still rd left, but will be about 1.5 miles of no rd. Not sure about the camping, but the fishing is good.

the guy said it wasn't that bad at the campground. There were some warriors there, but there wasn't anything raunchy or fambouyant like you see if you drive down the road. Everytime Ihear someone asking about FP I'm always reminded of that story and try to warn them. Not so much for the gay theme, but to warn them for the same reason I would warn them if any other group was taking over an area. Especially a group that has a sexual theme. Something you wouldn't want to be surprised with a young family in tow.

Without the road being open, it will be a hike to get you and your gear out there. Here is a map of the place:

Campground Loop A is the only one that I think is open right now. There is running water, grills, picnic tables, bathrooms with cold water only at the bathrooms. The fee is $10 per night as far as I know. You either make the hike from the entrance or you can be dropped off my boat near the Battery Langdon beach on the bay side. There will be a short bike path to the camp ground sites from there.

Is it worth it? That's up to you. I used to love going out there to camp. But I have not been since the road closure. I think it's a 6-7 mile trek from where you can park your vehicle to the campsites. It will probably be pretty peacefull out there since the road is not accesible.

Hope that helps.
