Default Anyone have a Yamaha 650 v-star classic?

So here is the problem. I've got an '03 v-star that won't get any spark. Tried and tested everything possible and all checks out. The only thing I haven't been able to check is the CDI (AKA black box). Unfortunately, I am told there is no way to test the CDI, except for testing and ruling everything else out. Gee, thanks. A new CDI is $500. So, is there anyone with this bike that would let me trailer mine to your place and see if your CDI will work on my bike? It is basically 2 wires so it is a 10 minute deal. I just hate to spend money on a part that I don't need (and one that is non-returnable, too). Thanks

I may be able to get one for you to test with. Let me check Monday when I get back to work.

Have you ruled out (aka: jumped/bypassed) all other disconnects? Neutral switch, kickstand switch, low oil switch... that sort of thing? Those often falter especially after a wash job.

Hogdogs, you are the man...even if you do just get lucky...but I had a mechanic look over everything he could think of and he said it all looks good. I did not check the fuses under the seat (last night found some good info on the web) but the symptoms are strange. It is kind of intermittent. I need to get it going as this is definitely riding weather.

Sequoiha, that would be awesome. Let me know. Thanks

spooney, One sure fire (no pun intended) symptom of a bad coil or CDI is they will work for a spell then just up and cut off... this is due to getting warm and a circuit opens or something... If that is what you mean by intermittent, I would be leaning towards the CD unit. Also, the unit can be good but due to dirty connections, will build excessive heat and if caught early enuff... no harm no foul...

Best of Luck on the bugger!

One more thing... Cross referencing (aka: searching bike forums etc...) may lead you to a less expensive one. Some models were produced far more frequently and/or used on more bike models and can save you a HEAP of $$$...
