Default When do you start trolling?

I've been trying to get into trolling more, but I'm still a rookie at it. Anyways when you're running offshore, like say out to the edge, when do you put your lures in? We've been running to about 90 or 100' before we throw our stuff out and then troll at around 8 knots but that's completely arbitrary. I just wanted to hear what the more experienced folks do.

Edit: To clarify we're looking for anything that trumps a bonita. Kings, dolphin, blackfin, and if a wahoo or a billfish wants to steal a lure and a few hundred feet of line that would be fine too.

IMO, unless you're seeing something like tunas busting, bait getting hit, weedlines, etc that's pretty shallow. I always start around the edge in 250'+ and zig zag into 600' then back and forth.

I guess it depends on what you're trolling for. We drop lures in the water at about 50-60ft. But we are looking for Kings and hoping for Mahi as we get deeper.

Soon as i see grass. Last weekend 18 miles out yesterday 30 miles out. Caught mahi both weekends. Got one trolling past a 5 gallon bucket yesterday. Grass sucks though.

250’ is my number, but like has been mentioned that depends on the water, bait, and currents. If I’m trying to troll and bottom fish same day we will troll the contours form 200-600’ of water focusing on drop offs ad current seems. Then we can just circle back and fish the scamp rocks

Ditto grass if you can find it regardless of water depth, and any larger floating object. Wow 17 kts is fast.
