I bought an open gallon of Yamalube last year at a yard sale for a dollar or two. Poured some in my mixing cup today and it looks rather black and has a hint of that strong gear oil smell. I think it may be old oil that someone put back in a jug for storage and the wife sold. What color is it normally? The Pennzoil I normally run is blue.

It's dark. Kind of a purplish black normally.

I would not put it in my oil tank or gas without buying an actual gallon of yamalube and comparing them side by side. You can buy it at posner marine for around $18 or $19 a gallon if you bring your own container. A milk jug works fine, they will fill it up.

This had more of a dark brown color, no purple to it. Think the auto parts store will be getting this for recycling.

No it was open and I knew when I bought it but figured it was worth 2 bucks. The lady was selling couple other marine type things and said they had sold their boat a while back. I figure the husband probably dumped an oil pan and used the empty Yamaha jug for storage. I do the same thing but did not think about it when I bought it. Oh well, only two dollars.

Yep, you got used oil. Good thing you checked before dumping it into your reservoir!
