Default Trolling question

I'm fishing out of a 25' aqua sport, if done right what is the max amount of rods I can troll without creating a mess? Would like at least two stretches one 25 and one 30 or a 15 and a 25. Them the other two could be a mix of spoons or stretch 6's, or top dusters. Do I need out riggers or down riggers? The key is I want 4 baits out. I'm fishing out of virginia now but kings, Spanish, blues will be the main catches. If I get out further maybe wahoo or mahi.

I have fished 4 baits out of 2 standard gunwale vertical rod holders and two t-top rocket launchers on a 17ft CC. Just keep your long baits out of the center holders and short baits out the sides. You might also try some of those planer boards that the walleye guys use that pull the baits to the sides. I have never used them, but they look nifty on tv...

I normally only run two lines though. Turning with 4 get to be a real pain

I'm thinking a stretch 25 and 30 with two top dusters in the rocket launchers one way back. I will be in the Atlantic so I will set a strait course.

I'm no expert, but I see no reason why that shouldn't work.

Only other thing I hate about 4 lines is clearing them when you get a hookup... or TWO!

Yeah espically the lines that are way out or the stretches guess t hat's why I normally do two and a hook up on top does make it hard to get it out of the rod holder.

I don't personally see a reason to do 2 Stretch's, but I'm no expert either. The difference you are talking about is 5-10 ft max which ocean fish will cover in like .1 seconds. I don't feel you will catch a fish on one stretch in the ocean over another simply because of depth. Now if you had a downrigger at 50-60 ft and a stretch that may be different.

I'd have more surface stuff with 1 stretch down low. I'd use a daisy chain or something over 2 stretch's. Just my 2 cents.

The reason for more stretches is to try different colors to find the best. I have had times were I would catch kings on a black and silver and reds on the pink when side by side.

Usually troll only 3 rods, 2 in the holders and 1 up top riding shotgun. Stagger the holder rods and turn into the shorter line. I usually run the top on either propwash short (with a clip on the transom) or way back. Not many tangles that way. That propwash bait get's smacked quite a bit.
