I fish 8lb braid on a 4' 6" rod for bull reds at 3 mile. The few fish I do lose is mainly to bent hooks, with very few cutting me off on structure. I'd say anything over 15lb is overkill for inshore stuff here. If you've never done it, tie 25-30% of the breaking strength of your line in weight on your line and adjust your drag until you can barely pick it up off the ground. It will surprise you how hard you need to tug to pull 2-3lbs of drag, let alone 5-6lbs for a 20lb outfit. You will immediately appreciate the ability of light tackle outfits.
