When fishing for reds or trouts what type of tackle should I be using and what should I be looking for to see if the fish are around the banks/shore/dock ? I don't have access to a boat so I will on the shore. Also I have a ton of bass set ups will those work for these fish as well? Thank you in advance

I'm using either medium or medium heavy fast action rods and 2500-3000 series reels. You can get by with bass equipment if you'll keep it clean as they generally don't use components that are resistant to saltwater corrosion. I use 15lb braid on most of my equipment with 15-25lb leader depending where I'm fishing (if fishing open water - 15 lb, around structure - 25 lb). I fish a lot in a pretty clear river, so I tie on about 8' of fluorocarbon leader else the line becomes visible to the fish (so their behavior tells me). I use a double uni knot to tie it on, eliminating a swivel and allowing me to reel the leader knot through my rod guides. I tie terminal tackle (artificial lures, jigheads, etc) on with a tarpon loop in order to get the bait more life/movement and eliminate a split ring. I tie hooks either with a improved clinch knot or palomar knot.

I don't bank fish, but probably same rules of thumb apply - look for fish directly (I see them off my dock), look for baitfish balls/clouds ripply across the water and fish drinking them, look for seagull/pelican activity.
