Default Sturgeon hits family in boat

Fish Injures Child

FWC Investigator James Armstrong responded to a vessel accident on the Choctawhatchee River that occurred when a large sturgeon jumped out of the water and struck three of the five family members onboard. The family was trying to escape a rainstorm when the sturgeon leapt from the water, ejecting three of the occupants, and severely injuring a child. The child was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital where he remains in intensive care.

Report today from WZEP radio today in DeFuniak Springs.

The report doesn' say but this probably happened in the Cowford area where sturgeon congregate .

Yes, when I was there last weekend, they were thick and very active. Almost every 10 minutes you would see one leap and they varied in size from small to very large

It is believed to have been in Holmes Creek around the Two Creek area. Kinda odd for them to be that far up. Very unfortunate accident. I wasn't far from there when it happened

They are everywhere on the choctawhatchee and thick. Had one about 4ft that I thought was gonna jump in the kayak with me one day just below Geneva. Talk about having to change underwear....

They are all up and down the river but seem to be the thickest from the mouth of Holmes Creek down to the bay

Post that in the "Ask FWC" thread lol ....Jk don't do that. Through the grapevine I heard to bait a hook on bottom with a big glob of worms, cheese, or fresh cutbait. They like deep holes!... and of course check your state laws before targeting a new species
