Default State vs. Federal Waters

I just bought my first fishing boat and would like to get out on Red Snapper before the 14th close date. My question is how do I measure the 9 mile state water limit? And how much buffer does the USCG/FWF give as a buffer when on the edge of the boundry?

One more thing, is there good fishing for Red Snapper in state waters currently? I did find a lot of public reef GPS coordinates at the link from this forum. However they were from 2011 and how accurate are they really?

mark the pass in your GPS and you can tell about how far out you are.

The pass is lat 30 87 19.000. You can hit numbers to 30 87 10.000 and be good.

Hmmm, Pass coordinates relate to state waters along state coastal waters in what respect.

Please explain as I'm missing something here.

while on your fishing spot put your gps cursor on the nearest shoreline. if less than 9 nm you are in state waters. you could be 20 miles from the pass and still in state waters. we are still catching plenty nice snappers in state waters, many on public numbers
