I thought of two things:

First, and most important, there are three teen boys somewhere that have retold their fishing story to anybody that would listen. Who doesn't remember EVERY fishing trip with your dad?

Second, your cast description took me back to watching my father-in-law, years ago, trying to cast from the beach. Lets just say, he doesn't have the coordination of a cornerback. He loves to be the topic of humor, and he lost his breath laughing at us describing his "running seizure" every time he would cast.

Great story and thanks for taking us all back to what fishing should really be about.

Thank you for your service, both to this country and to some people that needed a hand.

Great story, you have more than likely made four more fishermen.

I had a somewhat similar thing happen on the pier in Yokosuka also in the 60’s.

I had my trusty Mitchell 300 & 7’ pole & trying to use canned clams for bait.
There was an old Japanese guy there fishing with his fishing line wrapped
around a tin can about the size of a coffee can, a sparkplug for a weight and a bucket of minnows.

After watching each other for awhile, him catching fish around 12” to 18” (I don’t know what kind they were)
and me with nothing. He came over & with his limited English & me only knowing a few “bad words” in Japanese,
he showed me what to do. After that I caught a nice mess that made me a great guy with some of the ships cooks & the stewards.

I gave the guy my remaining 3 cans of clams & he was just as happy as I was.

Been vacationing and fishing the PC piers since they were built. Retired about 6 years ago and now fish them 2 months each year and appreciate all the help from locals and friends I have come to know. You can forget all you know about freshwater fishing because its very different.

You will always see some woman trying to help her 10 year old catch a fish with a rented rod with weights, hooks, and squid. Nothing better than to tie on a 7 strand leader, a number 4 treble hook, and a frozen cig and cast it out where the Spanish are biting. It makes the trip for the kid and the Mom.

When the Spanish are going wild and killing the bubble, look for a kid and tell him to help you reel in a fish because you are tired. They will take pictures of his catch and make a kids day.
