Fresh cleaned backbones and rib pieces work good, and I always try to turn the door of the trap where the flow of the water goes straight into it. Change the bait when it gets old and stinky, usually no longer than the next morning. In a pinch without fresh bait, I've used small cans of cat food with small holes punched in both ends.

Don't know how far N you are in Perdido Bay, but my dock is in the N part of Blackwater Bay (2 mi below I10), and the pinfish and blue crabs don't usually show up until after the 4th of July.
