Default In Search for a Quality Fishfinder

What's up guys. I just joined PFF today as a result of increased interest in off-shore and near-shore fishing.

My father's birthday is coming up (7/11) and I want to buy him a nice fish-finder. Because I'm new to off-shore fishing, I know next to nothing about quality fishing equipment.

That's where you guys come in. I have a budget of $400-$500 dollars to get him the nicest fish-finder that amount can buy. The boat in question is a 24' Chaparral Sunesta (not an ideal fishing boat I know).

I would like a large colored LCD screen so he won't have to use his reading glasses. Other than that, I'm pretty much in the dark for what type I want. Thanks for your help!

It's going to be hard to find a color large screen in that price range. How about a nice used unit?

Possibly. I'm on a bit of a time crunch, but if I can find the right model for the right price I'll buy it up.
I suppose there's not many differences when it comes to different models aside from more and better features.

Two brands I'll never buy again.
One is Hummingbird and the other is Lowrance.
