Default Scalloping Cape San Blas

We are in Cape San Blas right now and found out they are opening scallop season on Saturday which is early. Can someone tell me where we can go to have a good chance at finding some scallops without a boat? We are staying in Barrier Dunes right by the state park.

I appreciate any help.

Without a boat, wade out along the shore in the grass areas. We have found them in the past along the shore. You don't have to go out beyond the piers and boat docks.

From the park, drive back toward town. There will be a very small bridge on the road on the east edge of the bay and see Blacks Island right off shore. Just before the bridge There is a culvert where the water comes right up to the edge of the road. Park there on the side of the road. Long walk out to the grass beds, but it can be very good there. Watch for stingrays. Shuffle your feet while you walk.

Exactly what Fisherdad1 said including the stingrays. We scalloped out of both boat and from road last year while there. Probably saw 30-40 rays walking and non while snorkeling out of boat.

WEAR WATER SHOES!!! tons of urchins.

You can also get a guide who had all the gear at the port st joe marina. But doing it on your own is just as productive in the blacks island area. Just do what everyone else is doing and have fun!

It is a long walk toward the island and I would certainly wear water shoes. Sometimes during low tide and very clear water, you can look down into the grasses and see them. If the water is deeper take mask and snorkel. When I was there quite a few cars were parked along the road on both sides.
