Question Perko Battery Selector Switch

Is there any way that a stupid person, using only a volt meter could determine which of two batteries is connected to the #1 pin of a Perko #8501 Battery Selector Switch, without having to remove the switch cover plate?

Asking for a friend.

My guess would be that if you have your ignition switch on and, say the gas gauge moves, if you disconnect the pos on one of the batteries and flip the stitch between 1&2, the position that doesn't make the gauge move is the battery for that position.

That's a looong sentence......

Here's something good to read...The BEP Clusters are more expensive since I wrote that. I'm up to # 40 on BEP Cluster installs now.

X-shark: Thanks for the read about the BEP clusters. Maybe when the Perko switch fails, I can upgrade.

Kanaka: That was the ticket, Thanks. I pulled the hot wire from the battery on the side I guessed was #1, tried to power up anything, and couldn't. Moved the switch to the #2 slot and everything worked.

So, thanks for the tip.

Great explanation on the BEP clusters Bobby, they are the only way to go. Had one on the last boat and the Dyer will get one when I get to rigging the wiring.

Also, Battery 1 cable will be on the right side going into the box. Batt. 2 will be on the left side on that particular perkins switch. (neg cables will be paired in the middle). No way to criss-cross the wires because the switch box housing will not mount flush if they are.
Also, most people use Batt 1 for the starting battery.

The Perko will not fail....Just be a Pain the rest of its life.

I have a whole stack of them on a shelf in my shop that have been Removed from boats

With a Perko there is No House battery. There are just 2 Starting batteries....No matter what type battery it is.

What ever the Perko is set to....That becomes the Sole battery to power everything. Starting and House Loads.

With the BEP.....that is Not the case.
