We have friends that stayed at the new Holiday Inn Express on Bayfront, and they said it was not clean (put politely). Other than that, there are several newer hotels on Bayfront toward the east end. I've heard good things about Sole Inn on Palafox at Gregory. The Grand is nice though, just don't get too upset when a train or two passes by in the night. We like the bar there before a Civic Center event.

The Relax Inn is closer to downtown. Or you might try the Royal Arms across the street.

I second Sole Inn .. it's downtown .. bars everywhere. It's cheap and the rooms pass if that's what you're looking for. I doubt it's the Grand. We have stayed there several times when going to Pensacola.

Pretty decent deals on the beach right now also allowing you to take advantage of those amenities if you want to drive the extra 10 minutes. We've stayed at what is now the Surf and Sand hotel before with good reviews and you can stumble back from either the boardwalk or Shakers without getting in your vehicle. Flounders Ale and Chowder house there within walking distance also.
