I'm looking at buying one. Was wondering about pros and cons.

I would buy the rod holder mount to go with it.

They're great to have as long as you have a good space to store it when not in use. You will also want to brin a small tarp, old beach towel or something to wrap it in hen stored so ash and gunk doesn't mess up the deck or storage boxes.

Sorry, I wasn't clear about what I meant with storage. I meant storage on the boat when not in use. You have to make sure it is wrapped up good if stowing in the console, head, etc or else you will have a sooty mess

We've had one of the older style one's without the hinge for about 10 years. They can be difficult to keep lit in strong winds. The key to good cooking is to get the heating plate good and hot before trying to cook, then turn the gas down. We've cooked casseroles, burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, made coffee and other things. Not like the home kitchen but not bad. Way better than the little alcohol stove on one of our boats.

haulin' ash has one that mounts in a rod holder and we have used the hell out of it over the last year or so while fishing, camping, etc. it works great and we've never had any problems keeping it lit (to my knowledge). the size is great for what we do with it - usually cooking some sausage while fishing or a couple small fish at McRae. if you want to feed a bunch of people, you might want to get a larger one. this is just my experience. maybe haulin' ash will chime in since he's used it much more than i have.

Ive never owned one myself, but I am always grilling on the water and it seems every year I am buying another portable grill that isnt stainless and have to throw it away after the fishing season.. I think when I buy my next boat, I will spend the extra money and buy one. Its kinda like a cooler, you can spend a few bucks every year on cheap coolers or you can spend a bunch of money once on a good cooler. Ive probably went through three of the cheaper grills at 40-60 bucks a pop and I could have went ahead and spent 300-400 on a good one and not have to worry about it rusting/falling apart.. Let us know what model you go with and how it works out..

You may want to consider a small weber gas grill with the hinge top. I have had both the magma round grill and the bigger hinge top magma, and we cooked a lot of meals on both. IMO the round one cooked better and kept lit better then the bigger magma, but the lid would burn the hell out of your forearm if you weren't careful. We had some problems with the larger hinge top magma, mainly keeping the jets clean. The weber cost way less and has really been a good little grill but it sits on the deck, not a rod holder mount. I would buy another weber before a magma.

I used the round magma gas grill on my sailboat for years, works well at the dock, or beached. If winds are high it sometimes would go out if turned on low setting.. which cooks better longer.. High setting just to sear a steak or would burn it if not closely watched. Also keep a spare gas bottle around.:yes::thumbup:

Got one of the round ones & it does a great job on a steak. The grill and flame deflector get removed in the AM and it brews the coffee in one of the old style metal coffee pots. Wife sewed up a denham bag with draw string to store it in so the black residue doesn't make a mess.
