King Crab (06/06/2010)If you dont like pier fishing, By all means dont go! It was Freaking Opening day! There were maybe 1000 people out there half fishing half walking. Its a rare day for that amount of people. Yes walkers & fisher's clash because no one wants to hook someone. But the onlookers dont pay attention to thier surroundings which fishers over a period of time loose their kool over. Same with boats. I will say once things calm down out there it will be an awsome pier. Most boat fishermen arent into the competition of pier fishing. Also there was free beer & food with a donation yesterday adding to the fun. If your not a pier fishermen, You wont understand. Once your used to boating it, You gennerally wont go on a pier. I have done both a long time. I love pier fishing because you can go for a hour or all day. No boat to refuel or clean up. No rough conditions. usually you can catch your bait while there. Again, If you dont like it, Dont come. If you love competitve fishing, Bring it on. Some of the best boat fishermen in this areacame from pier fishing. Its not a good thing to be rude to the walkers but alot of them have little to no clue. They dont understand how easy it is to get hooked. Some dont care. But you never hear the complaint about unrully lookers not moving out of the way do you? There's alot of pier fishermen who read this forum, We are proud of our style of fishing just as you are yours. lets have a tournament day, Baoters against the pierfishers. We'll wear a colered tag or something to tell the diffrence & lets see what happens. Who catches more fish? Could be fun! I know several boat fishers that are worthy.
well said 'Crab !:toast

I have to say that this year, except for this report of poor behavior on Navarre, has been MUCH better with fishermen getting along with fishermen. I think that message boards and the ability to state opinions in a civil way helps in this regard. I'd be interested in the opinions of others on this subject.

Onlookers will always be a safety issue. When there is a crowd, I pitch my live bait/cigar minnow underhand. I can still get it out there without worrying about hooking a guy coming out of nowhere and wandering (or worse, running!) not aware of fishermen.

I can fish from a boat, but I like pier fishing! I imagine that one of the difficult aspects of managing the pier is setting the rules and enforcing them. Jerks? I'm hard of hearing, so they don't bother me. It would only be a problem if someone got in my face because I wasn't listening to him. But that's never happened to me. Bottom line is that if the other guy has a problem, it will just stay his problem if you ignore him. I think that if the rules are posted prominently, it's reasonable to expect patrons to comply.

I didn't fish Navarre on opening day because I knew that people would be elbow-to-elbow. Only if I liked that set of circumstances would I subject myself to that circus. A big Spanish run and people flinging gotchas on a crowded pier? All that it would take is one person not paying attention and it could ruin the day for everyone concerned.

So y'all be careful! Watch out for the sightseers (that's an interesting term, isn't it - what's the alternative, echolocation?) and enjoy the day. It's fishing!
