Default Too old for Tyvex.

Been there, done that in a nuclear power plant. I cannot imagine working in the sun in Tyvex. I am too danged old for that kind of work.

OSHA wields a big stick on employers. A solid hour of moderate work in Tyvex at mid-day would likely kill even a strong and well condition man.

Heat related injuries are a no-no to OSHA.

If you think a tyvek suit is hot in the sun on the beach, try doing an "attic crawl" inspection in an old building. I know it was 95+ degrees outside and I knew it was far higher in the attic. As a WDO (wood destroying organisms) inspector, I had to do these "crawls" no matter what. I tried to route my day so they were early morning but far too often, I was up there doing a detailed inspection at 2, 3, or 4pm. If the age of the building was previous to 1980 or so, the boss insisted on the suit and respirator due to his legal risk of asbestos...

Some of these inspections required far more than an hour up there and I was very glad to get out....

But I didn't get the courtesy of a "work/rest" factor.

Besides, I worked for commission or straight fee so I wouldn't have took breaks anyway.

I am in attics often, and have been in attics of several people on this forum. I know what they feel like.

Your sweat still evaporates. It does not in a Tyvek suit. I HAVE done both..attics and Tyvek.

Put me in an attic.

Also, again...it is not the employees or the employers choice. It is OSHA.

I have also in 14 years in business had the unfortunate experience of being fined by OSHA. Once. It was not pretty.

I agree that subcontractors are the ones on the beach working. BP is the one putting the regulations on the subs is all I am saying.

15 minutes of work for 1 hour pay. I like it as long as BP is paying for it. This should cost them as much as possible. They are not going to be broke by it.

Reread your post hogdogs.. didn't originaly see where you said you also had to have a suit on while in hte attic. Sorry. Thought you were saying attic is hotter then a suit..but both combined would be hell.

Again though..it's not the sub, it's not BP, it's OSHA

NAACP, needs to wake-up Because I see Hazwopper's 90% black that were trained just for this cleanup making more money than the deckhands on the boats most could not handle the boats/waves so we have to get the crews trained to be Hazwoppers but the pay does not go up for the crew

Who is the "Racist" the one Giving these fine jobs paying to the tune of a 1/3 or more {to these poor blacks} than the WHITE DECKHANDS.

NAACP
