Default Mystery Cast Net Fish :O

We took the cast net out a while ago, and I kept catching these little tiny fish. They had beautiful bright and dark green on their backs, and really white silvery underbellies. They were kind of fragile and didn't last long. The length was about that of your pointer finger from tip to tail. Anybody got any ideas? I've only caught them that one time and nobody could identify them. I didn't keep them because I wasn't sure if they were baby game fish or not and I didn't want to hurt them if they were. Then I started catching BIGGER versions of them on the other side of the dock I was on, about the size of a grown man's hand. anybody got any ideas?

EDIT: They're called greenbacks, no idea what the traditional name for them is. They've got sharply forked tails.

The small ones sound like glass minnows to me, but they don't get hand size as far as I know.

Weren't long enough to be glass minnows. I had people call them green backs? I'm not too sure what the proper name for them is.

I've heard guys call the scaled sardines I have caught in my cast net green backs or pilchards, did they look like these?

Yeah basically the same shape as that but a really vivid green back. That's probably it, just in a different place.

I would just like to state that I am impressed with your desire to learn and experience the bountiful waters that few are blessed to experience on a daily basis. With all the hooplah from the other kid getting caught stealing I just wanted to say it's refreshing seeing a young kid (no disrespect intended) absorbing what the good Lord has placed within your reach. Many of your kind are elsewhere doing less. If i was in the position to i would certainly extend an invitation to you. Kudos buddy!

Those scaled sardines do have vivid green backs, but its very hard to catch the right angle and light to show it in a photo. the small ones have a slight bit more spotting sometimes on the sides.
