Mullet in PSJ

We are headed down to Port St Joe next week and I am debating on taking the cast net to try to get some mullet for smoker. Are there any good areas to use the cast net? I will not have a boat, so will be from the shore. From everything I have read there is mostly grass around there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks.

Mullet everywhere there. Problem is the water is so clear they see you and scoot. Overcast or late afternoon best.

Thanks for the response. Are there any areas that would be best to start than others (ie on the cape, away from the grass)?

There's just as much grass on the cape. It thins out a little when you get to the tip of it.

Just got back, and chased them for 2 days as we looked for scallops. zippo. They are super spooky. I suggest early or late. Also there is a lot of sharp shells protruding from the sand that will tear your net. Regardless, bring it anyway as you may find them having an off day.
Wont matter, just being there is enough.

Last time we were down there i just took a pole spear mask snorkel and fins. Killed about ten med size mullet. Fried them that evening along with some scallops. The mullet were swimming all around us while scalloping. Little did they know....

I threw on them several times 2 years ago with a 6' bait net. I may as well have been swatting flies with a toothpick. I did bottle some up in Pressnells, but they were really nasty inside.

The ones i speared were as good as they get. Got those around blacks island. It was in August last weekend of season. Water was a little chilley.

Interesting. I've fished Mexico Beach/PSJ for 15 years. I've never seen a mullet other than the occasional single or pair swimming in the PSJ Marina canals. Never seen any in the bay... Never really looked either though...

I guess I will need to pack the cast net as well as the pole spear and smaller spear gun.

Thanks for all of the responses.
