Default mono question

I have seen a couple times where people mentioned having a mono 'top shot" which I'm guessing is where you have mono over braid. My question is what is the point of doing this?

I use a mono or fluorocarbon top shot on my jigging set ups. Usually about 10-15 feet. It gives you a little stretch and some stealth. Much easier on the hands too when you go to lift a fish. Tied right you never have a problem.

It's often done for those fishing offshore for big tuna's (bluefins) and the like. They may have several 100 yards over the braid (Dacron).

So does that make an advantage to using straight braid

For the big stuff it provides stretch which absorbs the shock of the initial hit. On fish such as bluefin....if you ran straight braid it would destroy your gear....rod, reel or both.

Well that makes sense. Thanks for explaining it to me. So would you suggest using mono top shot if you plan on catching bigger fish? Kings bull reds sharks etc

I just switched over to braid and I always use a fluro or mono leader....depending on situation. I also did that before switching to braid. I typically use a 15-20 lb fluro leader about 3 feet long. Braid is highly visible in the water....fluro is virtually invisible. In real clear water....fish could be spooked by the braid.

Yes. They are now making a white braid that is supposed to decrease its visibility. Not sure how well it works. I use suffix 832 10lb in green....always with a leader.
