<DIV class=postbody>There isn't anything better than fishing with your son and getting your butt severely kicked.

I had Snook on my mind today and knew where the bait was. Our game plan was to catch Ladyfish and use them for Snook. We had absolutely no problem catching about 20 Ladyfish for the live well.

Rhett slayed the Ladies on his fly rod while I caught an occasional one on a jig and grub. I took a lot of video of his fly flippin', fights and fiascoes. I hope I can edit out extraneous footage. He caught most of the fish on a small white Clouser tied on a #4 Mustad live bait hook.

Anyhow, between us, we probably caught 50+ Ladyfish and 7 or 8 Pelicans. Wind was not an issue but cold sure was. Most of the traffic on Kings Bay today was dive boats. I can't imagine getting into the water on such a cold and dismal day.

There was no sense trying to fish a Ladyfish because, if a Pelican didn't eat the bait, a Cormorant would.

We tried cut Ladyfish for a while, hopeing for a dumb Redfish but it seemed like someone had dumped a bunch of old crab traps in my only 2 sure fire Redfish spots.

Pelicans fight harder than Ladyfish. As best I can recall, only one Pelican was actually hooked--right in the end of the bill where hook removal was mighty tough. No damage to the Pelican at all. Most of the time we had 20 or more Pelicans around the boat. One even came aboard to take bait off the cutting board.</DIV><DIV class=postbody></DIV><DIV class=postbody>We saw dozens of Manatees yesterday. They were scattered up and down the river. We didn't go near the springs because there must have been 30-40 dive boats in a 2 acre area. The only really clear water is around the springs and, of course, that is where most of the manatees sleep it off.</DIV><DIV class=postbody></DIV><DIV class=postbody>The colder the winter, the more Manatees will bunch up around the springs. Out in the bay, viz is about 4'. Back before they started spraying water weeds, viz in the river was top to bottom all the way to the gulf. </DIV><DIV class=postbody></DIV><DIV class=postbody>We pulled in to Crackers for lunch and to warm up. After lunch, we went back out to fish a little more---right at tide change, I suppose. Not one single bump in 30 minutes so we called it a day about 1:30.

When I got home, I packaged a few Ladyfish for cut bait then took a long winter's nap before dinner.</DIV><SPAN class=postbody>

If the weather stays cold, ya'll will see a gadzillion Manatees. I'd imagine they are really huddled around the big springs this morning. It was 31 at 0500
