I often get raw jigs and lead lure bodies and finish them myself. Also use polar flash to dress treble hooks. It gives the lure more flash and visibility than bare hooks. Flash material works well on hex or spear head jigs, or you can use nylon or bucktail. For paint, cheap nail polish works well, just use 2 or 3 coats.

I used to tie flies, and the same tools work well for jigs. You need a vise, a bobbin to hold and control the thread, and scissors. It's easy to wrap the material on the hook.

Sometimes I get professionally made casting jigs already finished, but add a dressed treble hook. I throw mostly lead jigs, and by making/customizing them, have a variety of sizes and actions.

I probably don't save any money by making my own lures, but there's a certain satisfaction when you catch a fish on a lure you made yourself or customized. Also, I can make lures exactly like I want, and probably catch more than if I just bought lures already finished.

Thanks for the insight. I can see why it would be more reasonable to buy some already made but I think your right I would be more satisfies if I dressed them or or made them myself.

I've made a king "lure" or two out of McDonald's straws, but I doubt that's what you're referring to
