We made a "Fin" with hand holes to hold onto... you attach it to the boat with any ski rope in the middle which allows you to dive/rise to get a closer look at the bottom. Works great and you cover a lot of ground; mainly stay within 4-8ft of dept. My advice is to stay in the upper or mid keys... Key West is a tourist trap. Also, its worth checking out John Pennycamp State park in Key Largo
Thanks for your suggestions. By the looks of it so far we are probably going to stay in either Key Largo or Islamorada

Great advice and tips. We too are headed to the Keys in August for lobster. Thanks to some good info gained here we are renting a boat and staying in Key Colony (Marathon). Condo has a boat dock....steps away from the back door. Wife and I have been to the Keys several times and played tourist. Now its time to go and have some real fun!
Check the VRBO web site. You will find better deals here than staying at a hotel.

The family and I went last year for the first time. We will be back this year also, it is an awesome time. I pulled the boat down with us, and will do it again. If you are going to rent a boat, be sure and reserve early they go fast... You will not have problems finding the lobster, just follow the parade of boats. Last year we stayed in Key West, This year we are planning on staying 20 or so miles before Key West. Still close enough to go in the evening if you want, but far enough away not to be bothered with all the crowds. I hope you all have as much fun as we did on our first trip. Enjoy!
